
The Hon Justice Kate Cuthbertson was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Tasmania in 2025. She was formerly a judge of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Div 2).
She is a graduate of the University of Tasmania where she was awarded a Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours and a University Medal. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne.
Justice Cuthbertson commenced practice in 2000 with the Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania where she predominantly practised in crime. She practised as a barrister in Hobart from 2010 until 2024 mainly in civil litigation, professional discipline and administrative law. She was appointed Senior Counsel in 2022.
Prior to her appointment to the Federal Circuit and Family Court in 2024, her Honour had been a member of the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, the Anti-Discrimination Tribunal, the Mental Health Tribunal, the Parole Board, acted as Criminal Injuries Compensation Commissioner and also sat on the Tasmanian Racing Appeal Board, first as a Deputy Chairperson and then as Chairperson.
She has been the Vice-President and Secretary of the Tasmanian Bar, a Director of the Motor Accidents Insurance Board, Chairperson and board member of Mosaic Support Services and its predecessor disability support organisations (2009-2024), and a board member of the Theatre Royal Management Board and Contemporary Art Tasmania. Her Honour was also a member of the Sentencing Advisory Council of Tasmania. She has been actively involved with the Tasmanian Legal Practice Course as an instructor for over 10 years, including as co-ordinator of the Magistrates Court Practice and Advocacy unit.
